Imagine our surprise when we ran into a few girls we know right at the entrance – including the fabulous Miss Peaches. We didn’t find Whoopi or Joy or Meghan McCain here, but a who’s-who of Vallarta drag royalty.

The View, located on the second floor at Lazaro Cardenos 315D, just across the street from Wet Dreams. We exited past the food stands lining Farmacia Guadalajara, fought back taco urges, and stumbled onward, making are way to: We hope to be back when the dance floor is in use. On the upside, the decor was a lot of fun and the hacienda style courtyard is downright lovely. (The place is called “Candy,” after all.) And the color-infused drinks are mysteriously named after famous candy bars without any ingredients listed. Management did a wonderful job converting the space from what had long been a restaurant, but though our bartender was sweet, but his cocktails were too sweet. (Update: Candy Bar closed just two days after our visit!) On the night we went, things were slow, so we took the chance to flirt with our handsome bartender. We next walked over to Candy Bar, located at Lazaro Cardenos 388, which opened under some controversy when the church across the street protested its location.

Still, it is a lovely place with plenty of drinks to try, and just far away from the party side of town to feel like a discovery. The drinks are presented marvelously – some include burning sage, another is based on the Drink Me Potion from Alice in Wonderland – but I can’t say I loved the mixture of mezcal and white wine underpinning my cocktail (“El Dios”).

Insofar as Vallarta gay bars go, Bom Bon is distinguished by restaurant-style table service, creative mixology and a full food menu. Self-described as a speakeasy “inspired by Mexican icons with a pop art touch,” the place to be is upstairs on the terrace, with a fabulous view of the Our Lady of Guadalupe cathedral.

Newly vaccinated and free to explore, your intrepid reporter undertook a long Friday evening to investigate these new gay bars with friends. While the rest of the world emerges from a pandemic that has shuttered many bars and restaurants, Puerto Vallarta is welcoming the return of tourists from post-Vaccine travel with a slew of openings.
